With more than 35 permanent staff from diverse backgrounds, we are able to solve any education and communication challenge that clients might be facing. Together with our clients, we strive to achieve social impact and behaviour change through education and communication
Our Methodology
We have developed a unique methodology suitable for an African context. Our methodology focuses on co-creation and we consider ourselves pioneers within human centered design. Our methodology rests on four pillars: Understanding the needs of clients and end users, Applying global perspective to local solutions, Providing relevant, easily accessible information and simplify, Engaging in interactive teaching and learning and have fun

Services

Co-creation

Co-creation

Co-creation is often the most direct way to answer the needs of our clients. We work together with end-user, clients, and decision makers, using a combination of brainstorming tools and insightful exercises to understand the context and test possible solutions until we arrive at a viable answer. Co-creation also exposes possible errors early in the process, cutting down on costly revisions in later stages.

Strategic Design

Strategic Design

Mango Tree designs highly visual and interactive education and communication. Our team carries out in-depth research and field studies to accurately capture the context and understand the end users. Artists, writers, translators, and consultants centre their design approach on the user. We match materials, tools, and processes to the context, language, accessible medium, and conditions that the user experiences.

Storytelling

Storytelling

Storytelling has proven itself as one of the most powerful ways to convey a message. Mango Tree helps clients translate difficult concepts into stories that are easily understood and engaging. It also helps communities and individuals share their stories by providing the support and expertise necessary to shape narratives to fit the appropriate medium.

Education

Education

Mango Tree’s history is rooted in education and we continue to provide services and products in this sector. We offer curricula along with educational materials to use in classrooms. One of our notable products are the Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Primary school kits, but we offer tailored solutions for all levels of education.

Products

Mango Tree Originals: Tested, trusted, proved

Mango Tree has a large library of existing materials that have proved impactful to clients over and over again. These materials are ready made to order directly from our office in Kampala. If there are materials addressing the same challenge, but in a different context, these materials can be easily adapted to the new context through for example new illustrations.

Interactive tools: Remember what you learned

Participatory learning helps people retain more information than listening to lectures. Materials that require role play, puzzles, games, or other activities that involve both the facilitator and learner are much more effective as teaching tools. Mango Tree can create the tools that you need to connect with your audience and to help the audience connect with the topic.

Conversation tools: Discussing tough issues

Some conversations are difficult to start because of different levels of understanding, education, different cultural beliefs. Health issues like HIV prevention and puberty require discussing topics that were once considered taboo. Regardless of the reason, we create conversation tools that help bridge that gap. These tools work in one-to-one discussions or in meetings with small groups.

Information tools: Because information is power

In classrooms, communities, and on farms, people are empowering each other through the exchange of information. We create tools that help you give a large amount of information in a manageable format to a group of people. We develop anything from curricula to manuals to standalone materials that help pass on vital information to your audience to help them make informed decisions.

NORTHERN UGANDA LITERACY PROGRAMME

Working with teachers, language boards, schools, and Ministry of Education (Uganda), Mango Tree developed an instructional methodology for teachers of lower primary classes. The goal was to improve early primary literacy, both in the local language and in English. Today, Mango Tree has scaled up the intervention to six districts and 128 schools and is sharing its model and results with the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Sports and other civil society partners to improve national literacy interventions. We believe all children have the right to a quality education in a language they know and understand.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

  • Mango Tree’s unique materials design process, side-by-side with teachers, to develop an effective, efficient model that works in African classrooms.
  • Literacy content is introduced slowly to make learning more effective – and literacy gains larger.
  • Teacher training led by expert mentor teachers who know and understand the model intimately in partnership with government teacher trainers.
  • Teacher training through instructional videos at school and sub-district level.
  • Explicit focus on improving teacher’s written and spoken language skills.
  • Educating and supporting parents to support their child’s learning at home.

Craig Esbeck

Craig Esbeck

FOUNDER / EDUCATION CONSULTANT (EXPERT)

Craig Esbeck is the founder of Mango Tree. He came to Uganda as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1997. When he experienced the issues facing rural African educators and teachers, the Mango Tree idea was born. Craig wanted to create a socially responsible business that would make learning both effective and fun. Working in rural areas, Craig and the team decided to name the business after Uganda’s traditional primary school classroom: the shade beneath a mango tree.

In 2014, Craig moved back to the US after having worked in the education sector in Uganda for 17 years. Part of Craig’s contribution to education in Uganda is Mango Tree’s Northern Uganda Literacy Programme (NULP) which has received international recognition as one of the most effective literacy programmes in Africa. Building on the NULP experiences, Craig also played a role as education consultant for the literacy programme by MoESS and RTI/USAID which is being implemented in 85 out of 112 districts in Uganda for primary classes 1, 2, and 3.

Though Craig is now residing in the US, he remains an integral part of the Mango Tree team as he continues to work on education projects. Here Craig can follow his passion and utilise his vast experiences to conceptualise solutions, develop contextually relevant content, write curriculums, and design appropriate materials for teachers and pupils.
